Haiti earthquake: If God is all-powerful, why did it happen?

January 26 by TMC Youth

We got some questions on our site about the Haiti earthquake that took place Jan. 12, 2010. So we asked the Christian Science Board of Directors to meet with a few of us to talk about how they're praying about Haiti.

They responded to 7 of the things that bothered us the most:

I would have appreciated more more direct treatment of the Haiti situation. The Directors gave some nice ideas but didn't get to the crux of the problem. People need a way to think about this with solid treatment.

Hmmm….I saw these interviews as more of a start of a dialogue…some good ideas to consider to counteract all the mayhem and suffering that’s all over the tv news. I appreciated it. Anyway, it’s not like there is the one correct treatment for any given situation. It’s been cool to see the different ways people all around the world have been praying for Haiti on the prayer watch page.

I'm with Snaps. I think a short video interview isn't going to be able to cover everything or be a Christian Science treatment, if that's what you meant. What do you think the crux of the problem is?

Thank you so much for these very helpful and encouraging video talks! I have listened to all seven of them, and am grateful for the ideas that enable me to be a better "first responder" in my prayers for Haiti and people around the world. I love what the teacher in Germany said to Michael: "When you pray, you never know how many lives you will save."

I think one should be clear on whether God had actually to do anything with it. If you believe in the forces which cause a simple phenomenon such as rain, then you must also believe in other phenomenas such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, etc. Do you know that every year more than 10,000 earthquakes occur, but most of them in the oceans, which do not affect us. Forgive me for my bluntness, but I think, it is of prime importance to understand the cause of these things, in this case, plate tectonics. The event HAS occurred and it would be foolishness not to acknowledge it.

Yes, I'd be really interested in what Richard and everyone thinks is the crux of the problem, too.

Thank you! How relevant for the board to be accessible and so humble in approach. Great ideas shared. Remember Mr. Rogers -- TV children's program? He was also an ordained Presbyterian minister. One time he had a program relating to some major "natural" disaster. What stays with me is that he told the children to "watch the helpers." That's where I see God active, in the helpers, the strangers who suddenly appear and say, How can I help?

Coming from the Board of Directores, it was a bit disappointing, but the lady who spoke first (Margaret Rogers?) hit the issue right on the dot, it is our seeing that matters, evil is subjective. Trinka made a good point about the fact that you can see so much good and love in de midst of evil, but took a very long time in stating it. Why it happens is because it doesn´t. Disbelieve and Truth knowing destroys all its seeming reality and power.

Christ Jesus seemed, to me, to have no fear of ferocious nature. He slept through a storm that his disciples thought would kill them, and he walked on the water in a similar type of storm. For him, the storms held no fear or fury. His perspective kept him safe. He only stilled the storms for the sake of his disciples.

In the Bible, I Kings 19, Elijah was shown how no natural disaster could harm him. "And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."

Elijah was not blown, shaken, or burned. He was safe, no matter what was going on around him.

There are stories of people miraculously surviving things that human reasoning says they shouldn't have. How does this happen? What makes them special?

I suggest that they are not special at all but are the evidence of a deeper truth, the truth that Christ Jesus came to teach and to prove. The wind, waves, lightning, quakes have only the power our fear gives them. If we were to fully understand that we are eternal, spiritual, and indestructible as God's creation, the earth would shake and all we would experience is the glory of God. But as long as most of us are convinced that we have to suffer, that we are limited, material, and destructible, that will be our experience.

In Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, she says on page 251:8, "In the illusion of death, mortals wake to the knowledge of two facts: (1) that they are not dead; (2) that they have but passed the portals of a new belief. Truth works out the nothingness of error in just these ways. Sickness, as well as sin, is an error that Christ, Truth, alone can destroy."

Life is eternal. We will all eventually wake to realize this fact. In the mean time, we have to work to realize even the smallest pieces of spirituality and the present reality of God as omnipotent good, as eternal Love.

The whole video is only 5 mins so how could she take a long time in stating anything? lol

@Dawn-Marie, indeed Jesus showed us that fearless trust in God protects us, along with several others in the Bible. I experienced that protection when crossing a treacherous mountain pass as winds were gusting to such dangerous levels that the highway was closed just after we passed the gate. I prayed, knowing that God "holds the wind in His fists," and we saw the wind subside quickly. As we crossed the pass we were able to pull several stuck vehicles back onto the road. God is a mighty God!

As all things come together through history we try to continue to understand the continuum of this woven human tapestry created by God to help us learn that all things come together for the good .

Those who pay the highest suffering are those closest to God . By losing faith in God you lose faith in all that God has created therefor those suffering in order to bring us together are for nothing .

By keeping your dreams your keeping your faith Don't give up your dreams
