University of Rwanda Shares with Their Campus

NUR 2Lee este blog en español

Tabling events are one of more common activities CSOs organize to help the campus community know more about both Christian Science and their organization.

We love hearing about all the exciting things CSOs are doing around the world. We just received a report from a CSO at The National University of Rwanda. (more…)

Giving Freely – A change in motive brings big results

CSPhoto-2918I’ve been thinking lately about what CSO’s give to college campuses. There is a provision for CSOs in the Christian Science Manual—a document written by Mary Baker Eddy. In law school we often consider the intent of the authors of a given law. In my work with CSOs, I consider what Mrs. Eddy’s intent was in her provisions in the Manual  for CSOs. I think Mrs. Eddy saw a great opportunity to share Christian Science in a unique setting. (more…)

A CS Lecture with a Concert reaches hundreds

george and dave

The University of North Florida has been holding an interfaith-based Religious Awareness Week annually for a couple of years now.  One year, the CSO held a lecture thanks to the support of our local branch church.  During another year, I participated in a student panel entitled, “More Similar Than Different.”  This past year, we tried something new. God: Reality or Delusion? an event at Yale

CSPhoto-2849In November, the CSO at Yale University had an event called “God: Reality or Delusion?” with lecturer Daniel Scott.  Here’s some of what they told us about it. (more…)

Two UCLA events changed my perspective

CSPhoto-3007For one reason or another, I have always been a little hesitant when it comes to going to Christian Science activities.  Although raised a Christian Scientist, I always felt that Christian Science activities that were put on for the local Sunday School were events that were planned by the older people in the church and weren’t going to be that fun.  Maybe this was an unfair judgment to make on my part as I was so certain these events weren’t going to be fun that I never even attended one and gave it a chance.  Over the past couple years however, I have been the head of the CSO at UCLA, and it turns out I am the one now planning many of the events (which I ensure are always a blast!).  However every now and then people will come to me with ideas for events, and my old stereotype returns about the boring CS events planned by others.  There were two events that occurred recently at the CSO at UCLA that fell into this category. Ideas about Classroom lectures

We’ve been talking to lecturers about their experiences in college classroom sharing Christian Science.  So far, we’ve talked to Christine Driessen about interfaith panels and legal and medical classes, and Daniel Scott about science classes like physics.  It’s been really exciting to hear how well these talks have been received.

If you’d like more information about hosting a classroom lecture on your campus, please e-mail csosupport@christianscience.com.

Natural Receptivity

CSPhoto-3130Each year thousands of women wander around the Southern Women’s Show with the men they bring along in tow. They are all there for a reason—the trade show offers many products and solutions to their everyday needs. What a great place for Christian Science to be on display! For the past 12 years my branch church (4th Church of Christ, Scientist, Jacksonville, FL) has provided a booth for this event and Christian Scientists from the area have come out to help “man” the booth for 4 days. How do you talk to people about Christian Science?

CSPhoto-3242So our five-college CSO is planning a multi-faith panel. We are having Daniel Scott come and be our Christian Science speaker. We are planning on having three or four faiths in total there. This is how we think it will work: all speakers get 10 min. to answer the three questions we give them beforehand (this way everyone will stay on topic), then the mediator will allow questions from the audience. We feel it is very important to have a mediator to keep things moving. We are still trying to figure out who else is going to be on the panel, but we are going to ask professors and chaplains to speak.

Great Event at Grinnell

ComfortThe Grinnell College CSO had an event on September 9, 2009.  It was called, True Comfort, and welcomed about 15 students.  The CSO members wanted to share ideas that would be helpful to people dealing with stress.

They were happy with the turn out and felt that lecturer, Lois Carlson did a really good job.  “The audience was inquisitive and interested in Lois’ ideas and in Christian Science, and had many questions.”

Music and Inspiration at U of North Florida

The CSO at U of North Florida is having an event on November 5, 2009 outside of their student union.  George Clements will play acoustic guitar and sing his original music.  Then Christian Science Lecturer David Stevens will talk about healing in an event titled Let’s Rock and Talk about Healing.
