Youtube and Christian Science

CSPhoto-4230Have you ever searched youtube.com for videos about Christian Science or Mary Baker Eddy? It’s amazing how much bad information is available on the web. So I thought I’d share some links to good information. Read the rest of this entry »

Giving Freely – A change in motive brings big results

CSPhoto-2918I’ve been thinking lately about what CSO’s give to college campuses. There is a provision for CSOs in the Christian Science Manual—a document written by Mary Baker Eddy. In law school we often consider the intent of the authors of a given law. In my work with CSOs, I consider what Mrs. Eddy’s intent was in her provisions in the Manual  for CSOs. I think Mrs. Eddy saw a great opportunity to share Christian Science in a unique setting. Read the rest of this entry »

A CS Lecture with a Concert reaches hundreds

The University of North Florida has been holding an interfaith-based Religious Awareness Week annually for a couple of years now.  One year, the CSO held a lecture thanks to the support of our local branch church.  During another year, I participated in a student panel entitled, “More Similar Than Different.”  This past year, we tried something new. God: Reality or Delusion? an event at Yale

CSPhoto-2849In November, the CSO at Yale University had an event called “God: Reality or Delusion?” with lecturer Daniel Scott.  Here’s some of what they told us about it. Read the rest of this entry »

Two UCLA events changed my perspective

CSPhoto-3007For one reason or another, I have always been a little hesitant when it comes to going to Christian Science activities.  Although raised a Christian Scientist, I always felt that Christian Science activities that were put on for the local Sunday School were events that were planned by the older people in the church and weren’t going to be that fun.  Maybe this was an unfair judgment to make on my part as I was so certain these events weren’t going to be fun that I never even attended one and gave it a chance.  Over the past couple years however, I have been the head of the CSO at UCLA, and it turns out I am the one now planning many of the events (which I ensure are always a blast!).  However every now and then people will come to me with ideas for events, and my old stereotype returns about the boring CS events planned by others.  There were two events that occurred recently at the CSO at UCLA that fell into this category. My responsibility? No, thank goodness.

CSPhoto-2731As a student at a university here in Washington State, I have the great honor of being part of a Christian Science Organization (CSO). We meet once a week to read from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, share testimonies, and of course, catch up on all the crazy and fun events going on in each others’ lives. The Organization consists of faculty, professors, and students—both members and a few brand new to Christian Science—and that’s really exciting.

This year we are excited to be in the process of bringing a lecturer to campus sometime in the spring. This goal is giving us a lot to pray about because the event should be both valuable to those who attend our CSO and to our greater campus community. Read the rest of this entry »

Community service – CSO in action

CSPhoto-5161It’s a chilly Wisconsin morning and my heart is full with much to share about what’s been happening with our CSO’s outreach efforts on the UW-Madison campus and in our local community. We have a group of six or so CSO participants who meet every Tuesday evening. In addition to these meetings, we are interested in finding ways to partner with our community to bring a sense of hope, healing, and renewal. Read the rest of this entry »

Ideas about Classroom lectures

We’ve been talking to lecturers about their experiences in college classroom sharing Christian Science.  So far, we’ve talked to Christine Driessen about interfaith panels and legal and medical classes, and Daniel Scott about science classes like physics.  It’s been really exciting to hear how well these talks have been received.

If you’d like more information about hosting a classroom lecture on your campus, please e-mail csosupport@christianscience.com.

Some challenges and some prayer

CSPhoto-2890

The past semester has been productive but has certainly given me occasions for spiritual growth.  It was wonderful to come back to our Five-College CSO this fall and see that we hadn’t lost anyone from last year but instead gained three freshman and two grad students.  So now we have 14 members.  In my role as Northeast CSO rep, I was surprised to see how few of the colleges in my area had CSOs and those that did had less than 4 or 5 members.  This showed me how much work there was to do.
