Praying about eliminating flu

by Susie Jostyn
What could be the results of our prayer about swine flu? How about this:
Right where I had been consumed by fear of the symptoms and overwhelmed by all the potential causes and results of the problem, I was now certain that I was safe. I knew I was in God’s care, and I knew that every part of my being—down to the smallest element—was defined by Him, and safe in Him.
Actually, that is the summary a significant healing I had a couple years ago. That is the summary of many healings that happen daily as the result of prayer in Christian Science. (For examples, see tmcyouth.com and spirituality.com.) And, that can be the result of our prayers about swine flu. They can bring healing and immunity to the whole world.
I have to imagine that everyone in the world right now would like to see healing results when it comes to swine flu. Despite the fear and prognoses, all of us would like to feel cared for, completely good and safe. And, that is absolutely possible, thanks to God’s all-encompassing, universal love for all of His children.
Right now, the current swine flu situation is generally expected to get worse. Health officials and news programs are explaining how it started, how and why it is spreading, what the end results might be, and so on. People are talking about it right and left and are bowing to fear. Is it radical to stand up in the face of these authorities and fear, and to trust God to keep us safe? Yes. However, this is a time-proven approach.
At one time, under the reign of king Nebuchadezzar, throughout his kingdom, people bowed in fear whenever they heard music. The king’s decree was that if they heard music and didn’t bow to the golden image he set up, they would be thrown into a burning, firey furnace. It was certain death.
Yet, three boys, Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego, did not bow down to the decree or the image set up by the king. Why? Because they worshipped God. They knew God to be good, loving, the ultimate lawgiver and justice, and the source of life. They knew God did not send evil, cruelty, fear, injustice or death. It was a radical stance, and they “paid” for it—they were thrown into the furnace.
What happened? Right in the fire, not only were their bonds burned and their freedom regained, but those watching saw that they were accompanied by the presence of the son of God. When they were removed from the furnace, they didn’t even smell of smoke and the decree was removed from the entire kingdom. In short, when they stood up with God, they stood up for the entire kingdom, He stood with them, and all were saved.
That God-sent presence of the Christ, that inspiration which calms all fear, gives all dominion, heals all disease and protects us in the face of the worst possible conditions, is here with each of us today. It doesn’t matter where we live in the world. God’s promise is not just for one group of people. That love of Love is encompassing and walking with us all, and each of us has the divine heritage and right to experience that care.
We need not bow in fear when images of swine flu are shown and the alluring “music” of news broadcasts, medical diagnoses and fearful conversation begins. Discord is not God’s decree. Certainly we should remain law-abiding citizens, but in prayer, we can firmly stand up with God’s promise of life, health, immunity and dominion over everything, including “over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26)
Through this prayer and acknowledgement of God’s authority, we will not only experience freedom for ourselves, we can and will help to remove this unjust plague from the world.

Thank you for your quality posting on the swine flu. I like to research the meaning of words in order to gain a deeper understanding. So, I decided to look up two words “Swine” and “flu”. According to Merriam Webster Online dictionary, one of the definitions of “Swine” is “a contemptible person.” For clarity I looked up the word “contemptible” and it “may imply any quality provoking scorn or a low standing in a scale of values.” The definition of flu is “any virus marked especially by respiratory or intestinal symptoms.” Then I looked up the definition of virus and one of the definitions is “something that poisons the mind or soul. It seems to me that the problem here is mental not physical. As practicing Christian scientists we know that NOTHING can poison the mind or soul. I think the work we need to do for our communities is clear. We must hold on to the true identity of man as the perfect idea of God. Perfect and whole now! Thanks again for sharing.

thanks suzie! it’s amazing how three boys were able to stand up to a fear that consumed the entire land. we can do the same, no matter how many in number.

Nice one, Susie! Great use of the story of the three young men not “bowing down” to fear and being protected from death – I never thought of that one in this context. And isn’t it amazing how over the last week or so, so much of the fear and panic has been dying down? Keep on spreading the good – that’s what’s REALLY contagious!

Susie,
You’re so awesome! Thanks so much for sharing these truths. I found your message so refreshing and quite helpful. Thanks again for taking the time to write this healing article. I love how you included the three Hebrew boys.

Thanks, Maxthinker, Tyler, Courtenay, Julie, Nancy Ann! You are all right. As the beloved, perfect, whole, pure, safe, children of God, we cannot be contaminated. This powerful, spiritual, healing Truth is always “in the majority” despite what the physical evidence says, and it is always sufficient for any task. The only place flu has to go is down… and out!… into its native nothingness.
