Kendra Scott

by Kendra Scott

Hey, I’m Kendra Scott and I’m a music intern here at The Mother Church. I’m an acting major and attended school in Chicago this past fall. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. My family and I bounced around living in different countries until we finally settled here in Massachusetts. This is where I’ve been living for most of my life.

So what does being a music intern entail? Really, anything including organizing the library of solos to reviewing music demos from artists all over the world sent to The Christian Science Publishing Society.

The best part of my first week of interning here has been talking with the soloist of the Mother Church, Julia Wade. Although I was just filing music (which was still pretty cool considering how old some of the music is), I got to ask her some questions. Like, how do you approach a solo? What are the factors in choosing a more contemporary solo to perform at services? I’ve already learned so much.

Even though I just started work, being an intern has surpassed my expectations. I didn’t realize that my opinion would be so valued. For example, while sorting and listening to submitted music demos, I came across a submitted CD that I thought was interesting. I mentioned it to someone I was working with and the CD was reviewed again for consideration because I had spoken up. Who knew an intern would have this much power?

I’ve only been here for about 5 days, but so far I’d say this internship opportunity is quite the catch.

Hi. I live in the UK and I am an amateur musician. I am really keen to add more modern solos to our collection. So I composed some songs suitable for use as solos and hymns. The music is kind of modern while still being acceptable (well it depends on the attitude of the particular church, if you understand what I mean).

I have had some success here in the UK, and there are three or four branch churches and sunday schools using the music.

I have contacted the Mother church to find out if there is any avenue for making this music more widely known. Also to find out about songs other people are writing. However, so far my enquiries have always hit dead-ends.

It sounds as though you might be able to help. Do you hold info about modern songs and music we can use to liven up our services? It is a real pressing need here in our churches. I could send you a CD of the stuff I wrote, if that would help.

    Amy:

Well actually I would love to be going to the Summit but…. no, for a couple of reasons.

I have been invited to do a bit of live singing this Saturday lunchtime in the new reading room in Reading (just up the road from London) see http://www.csreading.co.uk/.

The other reason is that sadly my current body carries the wrong age label for TMC Youth. But… I live quite close to London. Are you guys staying over for a while?

[The CD I made is called “Joyful surrender” (see Hymn 109) and there is an email address joyful.surrender@virgin.net if you want]

    Davey
