Tyler

by Tyler Maltbie

I’m Tyler Maltbie, and for an all too brief four weeks and two days this winter, I am working as a publishing production intern in the Bible Lesson Products Department of the Publishing Society. I’m back home here in Boston where I’ve temporarily traded in my backpack and mountain bike for a brown bag lunch and an hour-long commute. I’m making the most of my last winter break from Principia College.

Over the past four or five months, I’ve come to terms with the fact that come this June I will be graduating from college. The moment I drive off campus with my new sense of freedom, I will not be a student on summer vacation like in years past. Rather I will be something else, something new: unemployed. Preparing for that inevitable day, I began to search for opportunities that would help bolster my college resume with some real-world, hands on, enriching work experience.

To make a long story short, here I am, blogging like a real TMC Youth intern. The publishing internship description on the TMC Youth website immediately interested me-a newspaper editor, print media student, and aspiring magazine editor-it had “Good Opportunity” written all over it. Unlike the other internship positions I was applying for at larger companies in cities along the east coast, this one progressed effortlessly. My final decision to go home to Boston for break was an easy one to make.

Today, after nine days in the office, my accomplishments, hands-on work experience, and new knowledge about the publishing industry is impressive. Thus far, I’ve been educated in publishing copyright laws, have played a significant role in developing and editing upcoming issues of my Bible Lesson, and have assumed regular duties in managing aspects of the Quarterly’s monthly production. Although the nameplate at my desk is made of paper and my cubicle is decorated with the motto “Less is more,” I feel like a permanent member of the office and I’m convinced that I made the right decision.
