Newton

by Newton Ligale Lubuya

My name is Newton Ligale Lubuya and I am from Kenya, a country well-known for runners. Nearly every place I go, the first question people ask me is whether I run. I always reply with a yes. And when I run, I know that I draw my strength from divine Mind, God. I am a student at Principia College and I am currently doing an internship with TMC Youth. I work in the records management department. (more…)

I had forgotten about kids

Kate Wells

by Kate Wells

This past Tuesday was part of the One World Festival The Mary Baker Eddy Library is holding this summer. Basically, 300 kids ages 3 through 12 are bused in from summer programs in and around Boston, and everybody tries to avoid injury as they rush the crafts table and indoor fountain for three hours. I loved it.

My office was generous enough to let me take the morning to volunteer over there, and I was impressed by the Library’s finesse with the whole thing. They filled up that big beautiful space with arts & crafts, body paint, children’s theatre and book giveaways. Picture Dr.Elaine Follis, President of The Mary Baker Eddy Library, painting butterflies on 300 faces. There was a professional puppeteer who did everything from Aesop’s fables to Massachusetts geography lessons. (I’m not sure how that worked exactly. I think the tail of the lion puppet was supposed to be Cape Cod, or something. It was…interesting and certainly inventive. (You’ve got to admire the ambition of a forty-something guy with seven puppets and an electric guitar.) There were new books for each kid on their way out, too. (more…)

Chelsea Palm

by Chelsea Palm

While Boston is no Portland, Oregon, I have recently learned it has its own beauty and charm. My name is Chelsea Palm and I am a TMC Youth intern for the Christian Science Reading Room located at 194 Massachusetts Avenue, right near The Mother Church. I have been hard at work this week setting up the plaza cart. It’s an outside cart that sells Reading Room materials that I pick out. I decorated the cart, and I am scheduling its staffing. Thus far, this internship has been filled with activity and a lot of learning!

Now about my being in Boston, I had always dreamed of being able to visit the Mother Church, attend services. I really wanted to see what a Bostonian way of life is really like, and now those dreams are real! Being right here has increased my understanding of The Mother Church and some of its departments. I now realize this is not an ethereal place that always felt like a sort of Mecca to me; it’s not simply a place I hoped to see one day—it’s real. (more…)

Megan Shields

by Megan Shields

I’m Megan Shields and this summer I am working as the production assistant for The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the group that handles anything to do with Mrs. Eddy and her writings. I live in the Chicago suburbs, but go to school at Principia College. I am double majoring in Mass Communications and Philosophy, and I also play lacrosse and work for the school newspaper.

The decision to come to The Mother Church for the summer wasn’t too hard to make. My plan to go to camp for the tenth summer in a row fell through and I found myself searching for another way to learn, grow, and wile the summer away. Because I was required to get an internship to graduate, I naturally sought different jobs around the country related to the media and applied to nine different programs, including TMC Youth. I was eager to dive into the buzz and excitement of working in a newsroom or maybe in film and video and other parts of the media, but I knew that God really was at work in my life. No matter where I applied and what my resume looked like, none of it mattered because God is powerful enough to put me in the best place possible. (more…)

Sasa!

Zinnia Madon

by Sonia Orwa

For those of you who do not speak Swahili—or to be more specific Swahili slang otherwise known as sheng—the word “sasa” means “hi.”

My name is Sonia Orwa and this summer I have been granted the opportunity to be a legislative intern at the Committee on Publication under the TMC Youth internship program. As some of you may have guessed from my use of Swahili or my last name, I hail from East Africa, Nairobi, Kenya, to be exact. So, what is a young Kenyan girl doing so far away from home? The answer to this question is very complicated and could take all day. I will attempt to explain this to you in a couple of sentences. (more…)

Skyler Gemmer

by Skyler Gemmer

Those of you who read my last blog know that I was led to Boston by listening to God. Before I had even started to look for jobs or internships, I was considering taking primary class. It’s an intensive two week course on spiritual healing. During the last school year, I did a lot of reading of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel in hopes that I would find an article by someone who I could see being my teacher. Amy Farnsworth

by Amy Farnsworth

Hi, my name is Amy Farnsworth and I’m interning at The Christian Science Monitor this summer. For the next two months, I’ll be helping out on the business side of the Monitor as an online marketing intern. It’s something new for me and I’m excited to learn more since I’m usually on the editorial side. I’m not a stranger to Boston (I’ve been here for 3 years studying journalism at Emerson College), but working at the Monitor has been a dream of mine since I started attending Sunday School.

Journalism is my passion, and being a part of the Monitor’s journalistic mission is thrilling for me as an aspiring journalist and a Christian Scientist. (more…)

Kate Wells

by Kate Wells

I’m Kate Wells, and this summer I’m working as a legislative intern with the Committee on Publication. My home base is here in Boston, but I attend Principia College during the school year. I’m a double major in Political Science and Religion, and this fall I’ll be studying Spanish and Ecology in Peru for two and a half months.

Like a lot of the other interns, this job seemed to unfold pretty naturally for me. I was wrestling with what to do this summer, trying to find a good balance between financial responsibilities, a desire to be focused and useful, and a sense that I needed some time to refresh and do some of those things you always mean to, but never seem to get around to: read, sail, learn to cook, see old friends, etc. (more…)

Sam Brower

by Sam Brower

As I step out of the car, I quickly grab both my bags. I frantically look around for the curbside luggage check. I see the monstrous line and decide to go into the airport to check my cumbersome bags. I am hit by a wave of travelers all heading toward the same check-in line. I rolled my eyes in disgust and head back out for the curbside check. After impatiently waiting for what seemed an eternity, I make it to the front of the line only to discover that I am now too late to check my bags.

With vocal disgust, I trudge back inside. After waiting in another line I finally reach the front. A very frazzled employee informs me that I will probably miss my flight and that all remaining flights to Boston are full. So, I say “whatever,” check my bags and say goodbye to my family. (more…)

Roseborn Afi Bonsi

by Roseborn Bonsi

Dumela (Hello), I am Roseborn Afi Bonsi and I’m from Ghana. I was born in Accra, Ghana where I lived with my family until we moved to Botswana in 1992. I am truly blessed to have grown up in two cultures that are totally different, but each beautiful.

Earlier this year I asked God for guidance in my life. I asked Him to be the star in my life daily. One Thursday evening, a career conference was held at Principia College where I attend school. This event was advertised as offering some free pizza so a friend and I decided to go. We were very much aware that a variety of Christian Science organizations would be represented at this fair.
