Keith

by Keith Wommack

Quite a few years ago, my brother, Kevin, and I had just finished a musical performance. The hall our band had just performed in was located in the Bible belt, near Ruston, Louisiana. The manager of the hall came up to us and was very adamant. “Just leave the equipment. You can pick it up in the morning,” he demanded. A law stated anyone after midnight inside a building where alcohol was sold would be subject to arrest.

We still had rows of musical equipment, electrical wiring, lighting, drums, and guitars on stage and it was fifteen minutes until midnight. Yet, Kevin and I were led to do something quite different than what the manager of the hall wanted. As the manager kept insisting that we leave the equipment in the hall, we felt Mind was leading us to move it out of the building.

We had been learning that God, divine Mind, does not know anything about mortals that it must lead. We are actually each immortal ideas of Mind and cannot lose or leave our place as Mind’s self-expression. Yet, as we listen for and follow Mind’s direction, we are led to do or say what brings out the highest and best-that which approximates the qualities of the divine perfection of present spiritual being.

When twelve o’clock came, our road crew and band members had shoved, pushed, and thrown all the equipment out the back door into the parking lot. Normally we would have carefully wound the cords and placed the hard-shell covers over the equipment and then carried them out to the trucks. This was the only time the equipment was prepared in a parking lot. And this had been the last show of my musical career. I had decided two months earlier to retire from music and devote my full time to the practice of Christian Science.

As we were finishing moving the equipment out the door, I washed up in a bathroom and smelled smoke. I found the manager immediately. He looked into the trouble and stated it was all taken care of. So the hall doors were locked and the manager left as we prepared the equipment for loading into the trucks.

The band and crew stayed the night at a hotel near the hall. When we awoke the next morning we looked out where the hall had stood just hours before. All that was left was smoldering ashes. The entire building had burned to the ground. No alarm ever sounded. No fire truck ever was called. Had we not listened to Mind’s direction and moved forward assured of ever-present harmony we would have lost a quarter-of-a-million dollars in equipment.

Why was our gear saved and the manager’s hall destroyed? It wasn’t because my brother and I were any better than the manager. We are all the ideas of Mind. I believe it was because we were, at that moment, receptive to Mind’s ever-flowing wisdom and intuition. We heard and followed Mind immediately. Our receptivity and obedience to Mind’s direction protected us from loss.

Thanks for sharing this, it was a great story. I’d be interested in hearing more about how you were able to use Christian Science while playing with a band on the road.

Thank you, Keith, for reminding us that listening to God gives us the protection that is perfect for our every need and circumstance. I especially like the way you shared the importance of being aware of the presence of good even when human gudance is well- meant, but not what blesses us. We are always blessed by Divine guidance.

I was most grateful this morning to be reminded that God knows nothing about mortals that must be lead. We are God’s immortal ideas that express His nature instantly. And we don’t have to work harder or pray harder or be better metaphysicians. We are, right now, the self-expression of the One. Better than fun! as a friend used to say.
