George heard that I took Hugh to the grocery store just about every Saturday. I loved my mornings with Hugh. We ate brunch and talked about spirituality, healing, and the practice of Christian Science.
Then George called for the same favor, and I had to say yes. George didn’t say a word when I picked him up. Then for what seemed like hours, I followed him around. He picked up each item, analyzed it for a full minute, placed it back on the shelf, and then picked up another. My mind had a meltdown. And there was still the silent ride back to George’s apartment and the slow carrying of the bags into the kitchen.
Then I saw a sheet draped over something in the corner of George’s living room.
I broke the silence. “What is that?”
George silently removed the sheet and plugged it in. “It” was an electric xylophone. After a few seconds, it started humming softly. George picked up sticks and started playing-beautifully.
What I heard made me see something new and wonderful about George.
Before the music, I’d been judging him. I’d pronounced him slow, boring, with nothing much to offer me or the world. But once the heavenly melody started, I suddenly saw life-vibrant, beautiful life, in his hands, his eyes, in his music, and in his smile.
I was humbled. His music forced me to begin using the Science of Christ that Hugh and I had just talked about.
God, Spirit, was always right there. I saw first hand that each of Spirit’s children are always powerful and full of splendor. Every single one has a brilliance that can’t be seen through a distorted, judgmental lens.
I’m learning that behind every bland façade is God’s dynamic handiwork. It’s hidden when I’m fooled into believing life is something less than Spirit expressing itself.
I’m also finding that Spirit is behind the qualities I find invigorating in the people that are exciting to be around. Their wisdom, beauty, spontaneity, humor, etc., is pure Spirit, again, individually expressed.
The lesson I learned with George still enriches me.

Keith, Lots of good stuff going on here…”patience must have her perfect work”!!!
“I saw first hand that each of Spirit’s children are always powerful and full of splendor. Every single one has a brilliance …” This reminds me of something I just read, “With the realization of oneness, the sense of diversity vanishes and the cause of misery is removed.”
To Pam,
Yes, the darkness of misery and pain cannot stand in the light of pure gratitude!
Keith… It reminds me of that great Truth, that it is not enough to just wait for God to manifest Himself in ourselves, but that we are required to see that we (and all mankind) are the manifestation. Then we are no longer separated from God but see ourselves as part of Mind eternally expressing itself as you did with your friend Hugh
Great piece !
Thanks Keith.. Love you Your brother Canadian Goose…
This is so great. I’ve written off people as boring before. I missed out. Thanks for this healing blog.
This is great, good comments too. Thanks.
I find this blog extremely helpful. I am in a new town meeting new people everyday. A few days ago, I was missing my old home and friends. Then I realized (was it a little angel thought from God?) that I had an important choice to make… I can make this new experience anything I want. I can hide away from everyone, or I can jump in, get involved and let my light shine. Only hours after this simple change of thought, I was asked to join in a new project that has been great fun and a chance to meet even more people!
God loves each of us so much! I keep remembering the Bible story of the servants who were given talents. We each have talents that are God given to share with the world- so we don’t want to hide them under limited thoughts about the people we come into contact with each day~ It’s so fun to see each other as God made us and views us!
To Sally,
You certainly are experiencing Love’s wonderful divine adventure. Thanks for sharing!
