Do we ever think that the nails in Jesus’ hands and feet were not as sharp as our painful experiences? Jesus demonstrated that every sharp jab of error, every thrust of hate was never sent by God, so it’s never true, never real. And if it is unreal, why then, make what seems to be our pain so real by insisting that it’s ours?
Were Daniel’s lions not as real as our aches and pains and that’s why Daniel had mastery over them? Was the fiery furnace not as hot as what we claim our lack and disappointments are? Was the serpent that hung from Paul’s arm not as deadly as our diseases and fears?
I’m learning in Christian Science that we can be delivered, set free from all evil. No matter how real out trials seem, we can be liberated from the belief that they were ever created, formed, and experienced as we daily watch and pray.
Praying to know more how God has made us to be His spiritual self-expression is important. Watching is also important. We watch our thoughts to make sure we are not accepting as valid the idea that God is not giving us something we need.
When our son Jordan was a second grader, he was at the piano, but he wasn’t playing. He was crying and complaining. He was sitting at the piano with my wife, Joanne, but all he could do was look at a spot on his arm. We do not know what was wrong with the arm, but he was tearfully letting us know that something was hurting him. We encouraged him to start practicing his music, knowing that if he would just start, the pain would be gone. We felt that if he started playing he would stop validating what God never gave him. But he couldn’t take his eyes off the spot or his thought off the pain.
Everyone gets mesmerized by fear and pain at times. In our house we sometimes call whatever is unlike God or good, error. However, we had been learning that more than human diversions lead to healing. It is the Science of Christ, God’s inspiration and power, which breaks our focus on that which is basically unreal.
I prayed to see Jordan as God made him-spiritually sound and untouchable. When it became evident that he wasn’t going to try to play, I was lead by inspiration to get up, find a red felt pen, take his arm, and on it write, “The error is here.” I then drew an arrow from the words to the spot that seemed to be bothering him. I told him, “I would like you to read these words and don’t forget where the error is.”
He slowly read what I had written. Remember, he was in the second grade. He laughed when he understood what I had written. He stopped crying and complaining and started to practice. What had happened? The healing had taken place-there was no more pain or mark. The silliness of the red arrow and words awoke him to the fact that he really knew that the error was never there.
Jordan knew that God never allowed error or evil to harm him. You and I can know this, too.

Thank you for this inspiring article. It remembers me, always to be alert and to uncover error instead of ignoring it. To dissolve it in it’s natural nothingness.
Do you think you can draw a red arrow to a bad mentality? :]
To Anony,
Yes, I believe you can draw a red arrow to a bad mentality!
I like to start with God as Mind, the only mentation or mental activity. Since God is the basis for all real thinking, consciousness, and awareness, there is no place for a bad mentality. The more I rejoice that God thinks and I express His thinking, the less bad thinking I participate in and the less I expect in the world around me.
So, go ahead draw that arrow!
I like thinking about how the stuff Jesus and other people in the Bible faced is worse than anything I will probably ever have. It shows me that I can get through my stuff.
To Anony,
Jesus allowed himself to be crucified. He proved that the worst of evil is destroyed by the best of God.
I rejoice that each of us expresses the best of God.
i think i feel responsible for my health, that somehow i have to watch this thing that seems so threatening. and because it’s hung on so long, I’m having trouble relinquishing or letting go. If my growing understanding of God was going to bring healing, wouldn’t it have done it already?
To anon2,
God is responsible for your health. He knows how to govern and care for you. Rejoice that you are made to express His health.
You can let go of contemplating the body and feeling personally responsible. Your job is to respond to His love and care.
