Recently the former airport in the Angolan capital, Luanda, has been replaced by a modern, sparkling clean airport that seems to run efficiently, and even has a smoking lounge—a touching sign of progress. This is the first airport that I’ve seen in Africa (with the possible exception of the airports in South Africa) where smoking is not allowed everywhere as a matter of course. (more…)

True Happiness

Everyone aspires to something better: a better life, harmonious relationships, permanent health, a good education and a good job. We all want to live happily.

In this quest for happiness we sometimes choose the path that suits us best. Unfortunately this does not always end as we had hoped, and even when it does, we are not necessarily happy. (more…)

Brazil is a mature, vibrant field relative to Christian Science. And the questions asked in the workshops held in four cities there reflected this. One of the questions in São Paulo was, how can you help a person through prayer if they’re receiving physiotherapy or another form of treatment? (more…)

“On our knees” for oil?

oilspill-1

I was really thirsty this morning. I poured a glass of juice and, anticipating a big cool gulp, spilled some of it on the floor. So I had to find a rag, get down on my knees, and clean up the mess. Thinking about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, most of us are thousands of miles away and we can’t get down on our knees and just clean up the mess…or can we?

The Rio de la Plata is 220 kilometres (137 miles) wide where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. On the one side of this grand river sits the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires; on the other side, Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo. On the Montevideo side, the entire shore is open for everyone to use, which they do, walking, running, and cycling on the sidewalk along the shore. (more…)

When I studied in Argentina on a university scholarship in 1983, I visited much of that country. From the Andean Altiplano cities of Salta and Jujuy to the subtropical jungle of Misiones where the panoramic Iguazu Falls straddles Argentina and Brazil (upon seeing Iguazu, Eleanor Roosevelt is said to have remarked “Poor Niagara”) to the alpine setting of San Carlos de Bariloche, approaching the southern tip of the continent, to the jaw-dropping, block-wide boulevard of 9 de Julio in Buenos Aires, a cultural giant of a city that sizzles with pizzaz like a steak on an Argentine parrilla. Divine compassion and expectation

Bogotá, Colombia has many theaters, art galleries, libraries and book stores. It also leads in urban transportation with the surface hop-on hop-off train, the Transmilenio, running right down the middle of major streets and with some 300 kilometers (about 200 miles) of bike paths. Colombians recognize that education and the arts are key to having an informed, thinking population that categorically rejects the aberrations of drug-trafficking and violence. (more…)

Cruising down the bike trail beneath a beautiful blue sky, pedaling against a warm breeze, I took in the splendor of the surrounding scenery. Grateful to be in the company of good friends, I thanked God for the joy and beauty of the afternoon.

Passing out mustard seeds? That’s what a CSO is all about.

new-seedsIn one way or another, I’ve worked with Christian Science organizations (CSO) for a total of about 5 and a half years—not including the time I spent in my own CSO at the University of Maryland in College Park ( Go Terps!).  For the last year and a half, I’ve been working with the CSO Support team at TMC Youth.  It is a creative environment where I get to work with really interesting and highly motivated people.  I love it! Safety and strength for aid workers

haiti-reliefLast week CNN reported that Oxfam was concerned for the safety of their staff now deployed in Haiti.  They said that both the unstable environmental conditions as well as crime and violence threaten those aid workers now on the scene. Each of us has a role to play in supporting the relief efforts much needed in Haiti, not just in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake but in the weeks and months and years going forward.  Yes, we can certainly donate money to organizations skilled in responding to human tragedies.  But even more needed is the ongoing gift of prayer for each and every worker on the ground there.
