Be a healing influence

by Pamela Cook
I wonder how many Christian Science testimony meetings this past Wednesday night focused on the topic, “contagion.” And how many Christian Scientists around the world must be praying about healing contagion! Let’s acknowledge that these prayers make a difference. They are effective—and irreversible.
Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Let us accept Science, relinquish all theories based on sense-testimony….” So, let’s all rejoice in the knowledge that each time we pray, we are applying laws of God—and these laws bless and heal the world. Why? Because our prayers apply these laws to our own thinking. And scientific thinking is not confined to a time or space, but permeates the atmosphere of human thought, infiltrates individual human consciousness, and encourages a natural drift toward God, which inevitably quells fear and brings peace and health. These scientific laws influence the trends of world thought. In fact, they are the only real influence.
Did you know that the word influence comes from the same root as influenza? So they are related concepts. One dictionary definition for influence is “controlling power quietly exerted.” As we pray, we quietly exert a controlling power. This power is God. And God’s influence is felt, uplifting individual consciousness from matter to Spirit, drawing His children closer to Him. And His influence is only good, all the time.
The Bible also offers hope, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
This is a simple recipe for our prayers. As we each draw closer to God-like, Spirit-based thinking—and resist any devilish thoughts counter to true Godliness—anything unlike God naturally disappears. We get closer to God’s view of His creation, which includes no disease. In turn, our individual thinking is uplifted and becomes an irresistible healing influence for the whole world.
