Thank you so much for this! For someone who has gone through that same situation it is helpful to see that sobriety can continue throughout college. This article is so important for everyone who is dealing with any type of peer pressure to read. Healings are beautiful things and I’m so greatful for the healings I’ve experienced!

Thanks for a lovely article Matt. I am also the only Christian Scientists on my campus and in my community (Christian Science is not so common in South Africa especially amongst the African community) so I know how tough it can be sometimes, but its good to know that God is always on our side no matter how difficult the situation may seem to be.

Wow this article really hits home. I am going to be a college freshman next year, and most likely I will be the only christian scientist on campus. Though I have never tried alcohol before, I know that a lot of people in school will drink. Thanks for showing me that you can have a great time without having to drink

Wow! I love this article. I am so grateful to you for sharing your experience. I am a mom of young teens and know there are some years ahead when they will be faced with some challenging decisions. I know they are very moral and have a great sense of right and wrong, but it isn’t always easy when you are in the middle of a group of peers and all of that social pressure. Your sharing this experience I know will help them, as I’m sure it has/is helping many others. You have proven that doing what is right has led to more happiness than you could have dreamed of when searching for it in other ways. So, thank you very much!!!

Thank you so much for this article! Just awhile ago I was talking with someone from the Committee on Publications and I was saying how I felt alone sometimes because I am the only Christian Scientist on my campus, too. What a blessing that I came across this article and that I know that I’m not alone in facing the challenges of college.

Thanks, Matt! I’m the only Christian Scientist at my college, so I’ve definitely experienced similar challenges–not specifically with drinking in my case, but moral challenges nevertheless. I can really relate to this a lot! I’d say I have much fewer challenges now, but they’re still there, especially in college life. Thanks so much for giving some great ideas about how to pray through these challenges and come out heads up on the other side.

What an important lesson for all of us. I love the part when Matt looked in mirror and saw “the stranger.” I’ve had moments in my life after I’ve done something stupid or immoral. I have seen myself and been like, “how could you have done that! That definitely wasn’t yourself!” I like knowing of myself as a perfect child of God–one who is capable of doing good and being good. And this can be an instant correction, just as it was for Matt.

This article is great! Thanks for sharing. I like how you lived by example, and I am sure your team-mates valued that too. Sometimes preaching to people simply pushes them further and further away from Truth.

I remember reading this article when it was first published in the Sentinel. I loved it then, and I love it now because it is such an important topic for kids our age to think and really pray about!
