Live to Love

Matthew Hellman - Testimony from The Christian Science Journal, June 2007

The book of Luke says that a certain lawyer tested Jesus, asking, “Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” When Jesus threw the question back to him and asked the man what he thought the answer might be, the lawyer responded by saying that Jewish law stated, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” The lawyer then asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” In reply, Jesus told the man a parable—the parable of the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:25–37). Today, even thousands of years later, this story has given me such inspiration.

My Church outside of church

Flávio Colombini - The Christian Science Sentinel June 5, 2006
São Paulo, Brazil

A few years ago, I was feeling very eager to extend my church activities beyond the church edifice.

After giving Bible classes at a juvenile prison for over a year, I embarked on a second journey of “Church outside church” when I volunteered in a local public hospital. I went there once a week during visiting hours, going from room to room and offering to read passages from the Bible and to pray with the patients. Many patients accepted my offer and gladly listened to me reading psalms and other passages from the Bible, and rejoiced to pray the Lord’s Prayer out loud with me. Some patients just listened to me in awe, as if I were an angel visiting them, and others started happy conversations with me, asking questions and telling me about their faith in God to heal them. Roomates 101 by Roger Gordon

Roger Gordon - Christian Science Sentinel, July 24–31, 2006

We were freshman roommates-and we were complete opposites. Dave drank all the time. I never touched alcohol. Dave played poker as if it were a way of life. I didn’t gamble, and still don’t. Dave went to sleep at 4 a.m. I liked to turn in by midnight. He never mentioned God. I went to church twice a week.I suppose a university with 36,000 students doesn’t have the time to match every single person with the ideal roommate. The housing form I filled out asked only one question: Do you smoke?

Dave (not his real name) didn’t smoke, but he did drink. A lot. And while this bothered me on a personal level, it also had a real impact on our day-to-day living together.

One morning, I woke up to find Dave had thrown up in the middle of the night after he came home drunk. It was a mess. (more…)

My first call to a CS Practitioner

My First Call to a Christian Science PractitionerBy Kim Korinek - Christian Science Sentinel, March 13, 2006

When I was in middle school, I loved to dance. I danced whenever I got the chance. At one point, my feet were getting uncommonly tired all the time. Soon after that, they were covered with warts.

Using Christian Science for healing was what my mom and I always did. When I was sick, I’d ask her to read to me from Science and Health, and I always got better.

This time, my mom suggested that I was old enough to ask a Christian Science practitioner myself to pray for me to heal the warts. I had never done this before and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew that the practitioner had dedicated her life to helping others with prayer. The practitioner I knew was kind and had a knock-your-socks-off joy that was infectious. Still, it took courage for me to call her. Finally I did call, though, and told her I was very unhappy because of warts all over my feet. I asked if she would please help me through prayer to be healed. (more…)

The Great Provider - Christian Science Journal

By Newton Lubuya - The Christian Science Journal, April 2006

Change is good. And coming to the United States from Kenya was a big change for me. I’d never been outside of Kenya before. You know, you have this huge picture of America in your mind from the movies, and when I arrived in the Midwest I thought, Wow! This is different. I’ve been here for the past seven months as a freshman at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, and I love it—every day is a new experience for me.

I’ve been studying Christian Science for the past five years. My uncle, who is a Christian Science practitioner in Nairobi, was my inspiration. I lived with him for a year and a half, and during that time I watched him get up early every day, reading and studying this book, Science and Health. I saw how he worked and how he healed. Nothing got him down.
If I was worried about money, he would say, No, Newton. God is our great provider. He will always supply your needs. And what about career? No, Newton. God guides your career. He will show you the way. This man knew who God is. He spoke lovingly and understandingly, and I liked his God. He taught me that spirituality is a discipline. It’s a way of thinking and living that blesses everyone.
