Always useful to God

employment-cameroonI have been active professionally for 6 years. During that time I decided to go back to university to continue my studies. I am an active member of a Christian Science church in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where I have served as Clerk/Treasurer for the past 3 years. For many years the Cameroon government had recruited young people like me, but without a signed contract! As the years went by many of them began to worry about their future. I did not want to get caught up in this anxiety, however legitimate it seemed, because I knew that God goes before us no matter the situation! In Christian Science I have learned that God governs us, and we are His reflection. We constantly reflect divine qualities such as intelligence, love, kindness, and patience. Therefore, nobody is useless and our worth is not measured by whether or not we have a paid job.

The Yaoundé CSO organized a lecture called, “God is our employer.” I found this lecture very enlightening. The lecturer explained that with God there is no such thing as a temporary job, unemployment, or an under-paid job. We are continually expressing God. He is our employer, and we are working for Him. So we don’t need to be a registered employee or have a contract in order to feel useful, because our real identity is spiritual, and it is never separate from God!

Every day we are called upon to express qualities like availability, presence, willingness to serve, punctuality, politeness – whether we are at work, at church, at home, with friends, at school or at university. They are not the prerogative of a single person or of a single place!

This helped me never to feel like a “temporary” employee or to worry about my future. Today, I do have a contract, but I know that with or without a job contract God will always be my Father-Mother. Because of this my duty is to recognize His presence in all my endeavors. The Bible says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5, 6).
